Hundred Miles or More
Jun. 10th, 2012 12:31 amI've decided to reinstitute my CD-A-Night I tried last year, wherein I'd listen to albums from my collection. The idea was to go through the unlistened music in my collection and ultimately make some weeding decisions based on my gut reactions. Sometimes it works and sometimes I wind up reconsidering that opinion. I originally was a little whelmed by Adele's "19" because the tempos were a little one-notish, but I fell in love with "Right as Rain". I'd really love her to do a traditional jazz album or even a full out 60s girl groups inspired one. I can see what someone meant thought about needing the "wall of sound" in "Rumor Has It", not that it makes me love it any less.
Tonight's choice was Alison Krauss' collection "A Hundred Miles or More". I'd listened to it off Spotify one day. It's an odd array -- not a greatest hits at all in the traditional sense. There are also several new songs, including a cover/duet of John Waite's "Missing You". (I feel old because I remember when that was playing on the radio and Waite was featured on "Paper Dolls" tv show.) The collection really showcased Krauss' versatility and variety.
The most unsettling song was "Jacob's Dream" based on the folk story about the Lost Children of the Alleghenies. Just utterly haunting. Strangely reminded me of "Hunger Games" for some reason. Maybe it's the style of music with the District 12 setting.
