Martina and Pat
Mar. 15th, 2004 11:54 pmWatching CMT's "Crossroads", I completely understand where that judge from "Nashville Star" was coming from with his advice for Sheila Marshall. Martina McBride was trading power songs with Pat Benatar and for certain songs, like "Independence Day", she sounded like she was screaming at the top of her range. Billy Greenwood was worried that Sheila was overextending herself, not unlike how Martina was criticized early in her career.
The similarities between the two women was striking, their strong relationships with their husbands and their daughters. They both covered social issues in their music. Pat recorded "Hell is for Children" as a reaction to a story on child abuse, only to have people take the title literally, thinking she was a devil worshipping rock singer. Alas Pat's voice is showing some of its age, but she rocks better than some of the younger singers. And her husband still plays a mean guitar.
