Original song night
Original song night usually distinguishes Nashville Star from the "other" music shows. Contestants on "American Idol" might eventually become decent songwriters, but mostly the judges aren't interested in your original material, they want to know if you can sing and perform. In previous years, Nashville Star has provided some memorable songs and songwriters from Buddy Jewell to Brad Cotter. This year I'd be hard pressed to remember any of the songs.
Wynonna performed once with "No one else on Earth". Her performance showed a massive difference between her song and the others. I remembered the chorus and the beat. Everyone was up singing it at the end. Ironically Wynonna didn't write that one. David Foster was the guest judge tonight. He commented on how harsh Anastasia was, but he had his share of barbs too, especially when the songwriting didn't measure up.
The really depressing part about last night was the only song I really liked was from Chris Young. However I didn't understand the hoots and cheers from the crowd for such a sad song.
Matt Mason also made an impact with me anyway with his quiet romantic song. The judges were bored though.
I made a crack last week that it felt like they were picking off the female contestants each week. That trend continued when Kristen McNamara was eliminated. Phil Vassar made an unfortunate joke about the competition becoming a "sausage factory" without the girls. The judges thought there was a mistake, but I was wondering if they were listening to the same performances. Kristen was all over the place. I was slightly annoyed when Anastasia mentioned Miranda Lambert. Miranda was a strong songwriter and performer. I never saw any signs that Kristen had the same talent.
I was pleased that my favorite Nicole Jamrose made it through, but I wish she had a stronger song. I have a bad feeling she might be night.
